Charles Burrell & Sons Ltd.
1921 Burrell 6 nhp 3-speen Double Crank Showmans Road Loco - Island Chief
Works No. 3878 - Reg. No. BT 3997
Built 1921. Supplied new to showman Robert Payne of Beverley and named "Excelsior" this engine travelled the north cast of England until it was transferred to the Isle of Wight and into the ownership of the well known Arnold Brothers who also owned engines "Island Prince" and "Island Queen". Under Arnold Brothers, "Excelsior" was renamed "Island Chief' and was used extensively across the south coast and in doing so had a fair amount of sea going time travelling from Cowes to Southampton and return journey after the fairground season. Island Chief retired in 1949 after 28 years in the Tobers to a new life of threshing on a farm, sterilising earth in greenhouses for a market gardener and into preservation with Arthur Mason's collection at Burnham market, Eptons of New Bolingbroke and Scarborough hotelier Jamic Clark, where it can now be viewed in a new extension in the Highlander public bar.
